This felt similar to Shannon Hale's Real Friends in that sometimes people do things that are not nice in order to make friends/fit in (which makes us wince to think of it afterward). girls who are already best friends and has trouble fitting in again. But when she gets there she finds herself sharing a tent with two older 14-y.o. Vera doesn't fit in with the rich kids at her school who are always going off to fancy summer camps, so when she hears about a Russian summer camp (partially paid for by her Russian Orthodox church) where her Russian-ness or lack of wealth won't make her an outsider, she convinces her mom to let her (and her little brother) go.
